Photon Print Farm
8x Less Work, 2x More Revenue
A one-person print farm used Printago to turn every order — including personalized ones — into a fully hands-off pipeline. Daily work dropped from 8+ hours to just 1.

The Challenge
Photon Print Farm is a one-person operation — no employees, no help. To stay competitive the operator priced low, and as the store grew more popular the work grew with it. During busy stretches that meant 8+ hour days babysitting printers: organizing orders, slicing plates to maximize nightly utilization, sending new jobs, and feeding machines between prints.
The dream had always been to automate enough to make the math work — low prices, high volume, and a life outside the print room. But the way the fleet was being managed, every new order added more hours, not fewer.
"I was spending 8+ hours a day babysitting printers. I did this hoping that one day I could automate everything and make the numbers make sense."
Something had to automate away, or growth would cap itself.
How Printago Made It Possible
Paired with a JobOx plate changer, Printago closed the loop between an incoming retail order and a finished, packaged part. The only things left for the operator to do are maintenance and shipping — every other step, including personalized orders that need custom-generated G-code, now runs on its own.
“Between Printago and JobOx, it has automated every aspect of managing my farm except for maintenance/repairs and physically packaging/shipping orders.”
“An order comes in and it automatically starts. I can leave my farm for hours and come back and dozens of prints have finished with zero intervention.”
“I do a lot of personalization — custom text — and between the OpenSCAD integration and full API access I have completely automated that aspect. Every order, including ones with personalized text, requires zero intervention.”

Results
- Daily time on the farm dropped from 8+ hours to just 1
- On track to double annual revenue year-over-year
- A 25% fleet expansion (8 → 10 printers) enabled 100% revenue growth — more throughput per printer, not just more printers
- Retail orders from Etsy/Shopify flow end-to-end with zero manual intervention
- Personalized (custom-text) orders automated via the OpenSCAD integration and API — no per-order slicing
- Time freed up is now spent developing new products instead of feeding machines
Favorite Features
Retail automation, top to bottom
Retail integration (Etsy + Shopify)
“The retail integration is by far my favorite feature. An order comes in and it automatically starts.”
Orders from storefronts land in Printago and are queued, sliced, and sent to a machine without operator involvement. Walk away, come back hours later, and dozens of completed prints are waiting.
OpenSCAD + API for personalization
“Between the OpenSCAD integration and full API access I have completely automated that aspect.”
Custom-text and personalized orders that used to need hand-edited models now generate themselves. The operator wrote integrations against the Printago API so every personalized order is built, sliced, and queued with no manual step.
Smart queue + JobOx plate changer
Printago keeps the pipeline full and JobOx keeps the bed clear — together they turn each machine into a lights-out production unit that runs through the night.
Manual control when you need it
Full automation is the default, but the operator can still drop in custom G-code or handle special-case orders by hand. Automation is the baseline, not the ceiling.
Advice for other print farm operators
“If you have an Etsy and/or Shopify store, the amount of time and hassle that Printago saves you is incredible. It keeps your catalog organized, you still have the ability to do everything manually — including very complicated special-case scenarios requiring custom G-code — but the complete automation of orders to finalized print is where Printago really shines.”
The Bottom Line
A lean, solo operation is on track to double annual revenue while cutting daily work from 8+ hours to just 1 — because every order, including personalized ones, now runs from storefront to finished print without the operator in the loop.
Photon Print Farm is a solo-operated commercial 3D printing business running a fleet of Bambu Lab printers.
