How to Sell Numbered Editions of 3D Printed Products Without Numbering Each Piece by Hand
October 9, 2026
Put a unique serial number into every 3D printed part automatically. Turn a text object in your Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer 3MF into a parameter, bind it to a sequence, and queue 25 numbered units in one click.
"Which number is next? Did #37 already go out?"
If you sell a limited run, a collectible, or a part that needs a serial, you have asked that question. Buyers pay more for a piece that says 37 of 100. The trouble is everything that happens between the order and that number being on the part.
Why numbering 3D printed pieces by hand stops working
The routine for one numbered piece goes like this: open the project in the slicer, change the text, save a copy, slice it, send it, and write the number down in the list of numbers already used. Then do it again for the next order.
That routine costs you in three places.
- Labor per unit. The work grows with every order, not every design. Ten orders is ten edits, ten saved copies, ten slices.
- Duplicates and gaps. A hand-kept list drifts. One duplicate number undoes the reason the buyer paid more for the edition.
- A ceiling on what you sell. Shops keep editions small, or skip numbered and personalized products entirely, because the editing does not fit in the day.
Most shops cope with a spreadsheet of issued serials, a folder of project copies named after customers, or a sticker applied after printing. Photon Print Farm hand-edited personalized text orders one at a time before moving to Printago (their story).
Printago is 3D print farm software that runs production from order to finished print. It works for a side hustle with three printers and for a facility with three hundred. Here is how it takes the numbering off your hands, screen by screen.
How do I make text in a 3MF file change for every print?
You start in the slicer you already use. The feature that does this is the text placeholder.
- Open your project in Bambu Studio 2.2 or newer, or OrcaSlicer.
- Add 3D text with the Text tool where the number should go. Type something like
001. This is only the fallback text. - In the object tree, rename the text object so its name starts with
PrintagoParam, for examplePrintagoParamSerial. If the text is attached to a model, rename the text part inside the object, not the parent object. - Save the project with File → Save Project.
The name is the whole marker. The text inside it never matters.
How do I upload a Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer project to Printago?
Upload the 3MF as a part. Printago reads the whole project, so plates, modifiers, paint, supports and print settings carry through untouched (3MF project files).
On the part page, the Parameters section now lists a string parameter labelled Serial: the name with the marker stripped off. It appears as soon as you pick the file, before you save.
The Replacement sizing column on that table decides what happens when a value is longer than the text you authored. The default, Fit within bounds, keeps your proportions and shrinks a longer value only if it would run outside the space the original text took. PTR-01024 lands in the same spot as 001 without overhanging the edge.
How do I create automatic serial numbers for 3D prints?
Open Sequences under Products in the sidebar and create a sequence. A sequence is a counter with a display format:
- a prefix and a suffix
- a zero-padded width
- plain digits, or base 32 letters and numbers that leave out I, L, O and U so a printed serial is never misread
A prefix of PTR- with five digits reads PTR-01024. Set the format with care: it locks once the first serial is issued, because a reformatted sequence could later print a number that reads the same as one already out the door.
The Sequences page lists each sequence with its next serial, how many it has issued, and which SKUs use it.
How do I connect a serial number to a product listing?
Open the SKU that sells the edition and configure its linked part (SKU variants). Next to the Serial parameter, click the link button. Below the variant properties, the dropdown offers Or use a sequence (auto serial numbers), with each sequence's next serial beside it. Pick yours. An amber chip with the sequence name replaces the value field.
From here the number is supplied on every print. Nobody types it.
How do I print 25 numbered pieces in one run?
Queue 25. You get 25 print jobs, stamped with 25 consecutive serials. Each unit renders its own number into the geometry and slices on its own. The run stays together in the queue as one group, in serial order, and every row carries an amber serial chip.
Serials are consumed the moment the prints are queued, and a number, once issued, is never issued again in that sequence. A cancelled or failed print keeps its number. If you retry a job, the confirmation lists the exact serials about to print a second time, so you know before you click.
How do I number every item on a plate of keychains?
Say a plate holds twelve keychains, each with the same PrintagoParamSerial text. On the SKU, under the sequence chip, you choose:
- Increment per object: twelve keychains, twelve consecutive numbers.
- Share across plate: twelve keychains, one number printed twelve times.
A badge such as Uses 7 serials per queued set keeps a running count as you pick plates and quantities, so you see how many numbers a queue click will use before you make it.
Can I see which print job made which serial?
Click a sequence on the Sequences page to open its issue history. Every serial is listed with the print job that consumed it, and for plates, which object received it. When someone asks "which print made this one?", the answer is already written down. That record is what contract work with a serial on every part asks for, and you keep it as a side effect of printing.
Does the same setup work for name orders?
Yes. A text placeholder does not have to come from a sequence. Bind it to a SKU option, type a value in the Print dialog, or let personalization values on the order (for example Shopify line item properties) whose names match the placeholder fill it in when the order builds. One 3MF covers every name.
What to know before you start
- Serialized units slice individually, so a run takes more slicing time than the same quantity of identical parts.
- Sequences are on commercial plans.
- Uniqueness holds within one sequence. Two sequences with overlapping formats can produce the same text; the dialog warns you but does not block it, so give each sequence its own prefix.
- CJK text does not render yet. Use a font from the Noto, DejaVu or Liberation families.
- One request can queue up to 500 serialized units, and you cannot hand-pick a serial for a specific unit.
What this lets you sell
A numbered edition becomes an ordinary listing: one SKU, one 3MF, any number of units. You can price the numbered run above the open run, take name orders at volume with the same hands, and say yes to a contract that needs a serial on every part. The editing that used to set the size of your catalog is gone.
