How to Sell Personalized 3D Printed Products on Etsy Without Editing a File for Every Order
October 15, 2026
Put the buyer's name into your 3D print automatically. Rename one text object in your Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer 3MF, link it to your Etsy or Shopify personalization field, and every paid order prints with the right name and color.
Personalized listings sell for more. A pet tag with the dog's name on it, a desk plate, a cake topper with a date: buyers pay extra for the name, and those are often a shop's best listings.
Each of those orders is also a small design job. Open the project, retype the name, check it fits, re-slice, export, and send it to a printer with the right color loaded. Then do the next one.
Why personalized orders stop scaling
With five custom orders a week, the routine is fine. It stops working once custom orders outnumber the evenings left to edit them, because the work grows with every order, not every design.
What it costs:
- Hours per order. Every name is another session in the slicer and another exported file.
- Mistakes. A retyped name is a chance to misspell it, and a misspelled name is a reprint or a refund.
- A ceiling on the catalog. Shops cap how many listings take a name, stretch processing times, or switch personalization off in busy weeks. The listing that earns the most is the one that gets limited.
Most sellers cope by hand-editing a copy of the file per order, a folder full of project files named after customers, or paying someone to do the re-slicing. Photon Print Farm, a one-person shop, hand-edited personalized text orders one at a time inside 8+ hour days before automating them (their story).
Printago is 3D print farm software that runs production from order to finished print. It works for a side hustle with three printers and for a facility with three hundred. Here is how it takes the per-order editing off your hands, using a pet name tag sold on Etsy with a Color option and a text question, "Pet name".
How do I make the name in a 3MF change for every order?
You start in the slicer you already use. The feature is the text placeholder: a text object Printago fills in for you.
- Open the tag in Bambu Studio 2.2 or newer, or OrcaSlicer.
- Add the name with the Text tool. Type a sample, say
Biscuit. This is only the fallback text. - In the object tree, rename the text object
PrintagoParamName. If the text sits on the tag, rename the text part inside the object, not the parent object. - Save with File → Save Project.
The name of the object is the whole marker. The text inside it never matters.
How do I upload a Bambu Studio project to Printago?
Go to Products → Parts and click + Add Part, then pick the 3MF. Before you save, the Parameters section lists a string parameter labelled Name: the object's name with the marker stripped off. Plates, paint, modifiers, supports and print settings carry through untouched.
Each placeholder has a Replacement sizing setting in that table. Leave it on the default, Fit within bounds. A longer name keeps your font and proportions and shrinks evenly only if it would run outside the space Biscuit took. "Sir Wigglesworth" lands on the same tag without hanging off the edge. If a value had to shrink, the build log says so, so you see it before the part comes off the plate.
How do I connect Etsy personalization to a 3D print?
Connect the Etsy integration, then open the Etsy → Printago tab. Listings that ask personalization questions are flagged. Expand one to see each question, its type, and whether it is required.
When you import the listing's SKUs, the confirmation window previews what it will create. Each text question becomes a personalization variant named after the question, so "Pet name" arrives ready to map. Dropdown questions carry every choice you offer on Etsy as a value. A question that shares a name with a variant you already have reuses it instead of making a duplicate.
How do I put the buyer's name and color choice on one listing?
Open the SKU, and in the Linked Parts section click Edit on the tag part (SKU variants).
- In the Parameters table, click the link icon next to Name and map it to the "Pet name" personalization variant.
- In the Materials section, click Configure on the material slot and map it to your Color variant, so a buyer who picks Red gets the red filament.
Click Save Linked Part. One SKU and one part file now cover every color and every name.
What happens when a personalized order comes in?
Etsy notifies Printago the moment an order is paid, and it arrives within seconds. Printago reads "Pet name: Biscuit" off the order, rebuilds the text with the buyer's value in the same font, on the same surface, then slices it and queues it for a printer with the right material loaded. Nobody opens the file.
If a required answer is missing, the order does not print your sample name. Every variant on a SKU is required by default, so the order is held in reconciliation as missing required option until you fill it in. Etsy questions you did not mark required import as optional, and those orders go through normally.
Does this work for Shopify and ShipStation orders?
Yes. On Shopify, personalization values on an order item, such as line item properties, whose names match a placeholder are applied automatically when the order builds. On ShipStation, item options from whatever channel sold the item come across as the buyer's selected options and personalization, and map the same way.
What if the shape changes with the order, not just the text?
Text placeholders handle text. If a ring size, a box length, or a hole spacing changes per order, build the part in OpenSCAD or CadQuery and build123d and map its parameters to SKU variants through the same Linked Parts screen. That is how Photon Print Farm automated its custom-text orders, through OpenSCAD and the API: "Every order, including ones with personalized text, requires zero intervention." Their daily farm time went from 8+ hours to 1.
What to know before you start
- The text must come from Bambu Studio 2.2 or newer, or OrcaSlicer. Older Bambu Studio text cannot be read.
- Fonts: Noto Sans, Noto Serif, DejaVu and Liberation families. Arial maps to Liberation Sans and Courier New to Liberation Mono, so spacing holds.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean names do not render yet.
- Each personalized unit has its own geometry, so it slices on its own.
What this lets you sell
A name field stops being a per-order chore and becomes a listing setting. You can put personalization on listings you kept plain because they were too much work, keep it switched on through peak weeks, and sell name and color together on one listing. A custom order placed at 2 a.m. can be sliced and queued before you are up.
