How to Use Bambu Studio with an A1 Combo

June 19, 2026

Set up the A1 Combo (A1 plus AMS lite) in Bambu Studio: load filaments, assign colors, slice multi-color prints, and keep purge waste under control.

The A1 Combo is the A1 printer plus the AMS lite, and using it in Bambu Studio comes down to two things: tell the slicer what is loaded in each AMS lite slot, then assign those colors to your model. Once set up, multi-color prints run automatically.

Set up the AMS lite

  1. Select the A1 printer profile so Bambu Studio knows the machine, and confirm the AMS lite appears in the device/filament area.
  2. Load a spool into each AMS lite slot.
  3. In Bambu Studio, set each slot's filament type and color to match the physical spools. Getting this right is what makes the on-screen colors reflect reality, and lets the slicer plan changes correctly. If you use third-party filament, set up a custom filament profile per spool.

Assign colors and slice

  • Whole objects: select an object and assign it to a slot.
  • Multi-color on one object: use the Color Painting tool to paint regions in each slot's color.

Slice and check the Preview. The A1 Combo switches filament automatically at each change, so once colors are assigned the print runs unattended.

Manage purge waste

Every color change purges the old filament, so multi-color jobs use noticeably more material and time. Tune flush volumes and the prime tower, and minimize color changes per layer, to keep it down. The full breakdown is in removing the prime line and purge tower.

If you only need one color, assign everything to a single slot and it prints like a normal A1 with no purging.

Why this matters for a print farm

The A1 Combo is a popular farm building block because it makes multi-color hands-off, but purge waste and slower multi-color jobs are real costs at volume. The move is to route multi-color work to AMS-equipped machines and keep single-color jobs flowing elsewhere.

Printago manages fleets of A1s and other Bambu machines in one queue, tracks color and material per job through material intelligence, and slices in the cloud with Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer. For building out a Bambu operation, see the Bambu Lab print farm guide and running Bambu without a Pi.
