The Prusa XL 5-Toolhead is a CoreXY large-format printer that carries five independent Nextruder toolheads on a 360 × 360 × 360 mm build volume, enabling true multi-material and multi-color printing without filament purging or a priming tower. Because each toolhead keeps its own loaded filament path, color and material changes need only a mechanical dock-and-pick swap rather than a retraction-and-purge cycle, drastically reducing waste and change time versus MMU-style systems. The architecture also allows genuinely dissimilar materials in one print, for example PLA structural bodies with PETG supports that release cleanly. It targets professional users and studios with high multi-material output demands.

Pros

  • Five independent toolheads enable true zero-waste multi-material printing
  • Toolhead swaps are faster than MMU purge cycles, saving time on multi-color jobs
  • Supports incompatible material pairings (for example PLA with PETG supports) for clean removal
  • Modular: can start with fewer toolheads and expand

Cons

  • High upfront cost with five toolheads
  • Toolchanger docking mechanism adds complexity and a potential failure point
  • Large footprint; enclosure sold separately for engineering filaments
